Rabbi Elie Abadie, M.D. joined the Jewish Council of the Emirates (JCE) in 2020 as its senior and resident rabbi. As the Jewish community in the United Arab Emirates experiences dramatic growth from an influx of Jewish tourists from Israel and the West following the historic signing of the Abraham Accords, Rabbi Dr. Abadie provides spiritual leadership to the local community helping to build and grow Jewish life in the Gulf.

Rabbi Dr. Abadie joined the JCE with a vision to create critical Jewish infrastructure for the local community, including a day school, a mikvah, a Beit Din/Jewish court and the Arabian Kosher Certification Agency.

Descending from a distinguished rabbinic lineage, Rabbi Dr. Abadie most recently served in several spiritual leadership roles, including as director of the Jacob E. Safra Institute of Sephardic Studies at Yeshiva University in New York, founder and head of school at the Sephardic Academy of Manhattan, and rabbi of Manhattan East Synagogue. Through these positions, Rabbi Abadie has become a respected leader in the Sephardic Jewish community, guiding congregants and students alike on religious issues and creating key partnerships within the community and beyond. He also served as co-president of Justice for Jews from Arab Countries (JJAC), where he was instrumental in passing a congressional resolution on behalf of Jews from Arab countries to be recognized in negotiations regarding Middle East refugees.

Rabbi Dr. Abadie is currently a member of the Muslim-Jewish Advisory Council of the American Jewish Committee (AJC), as well as a member of the Baku II Summit of International Religious Leaders. He also belongs to the Hommes des Parole Congress of Imams and Rabbis.

While recognized as a leading Sephardic scholar and community leader, Rabbi Dr. Abadie’s unique experience also serving Ashkenazi congregants makes him uniquely qualified to work with the diverse Jewish community in Dubai.

Rabbi Dr. Abadie has received over 30 awards and honors for his leadership, most notably the Orden Del Merito Civil from His Majesty King Juan Carlos of Spain in 2012.

He earned his rabbinic ordination from Yeshiva University’s Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary (RIETS) and his master’s degree in Jewish philosophy from Yeshiva University’s Bernard Revel School of Jewish Studies and his bachelor’s degrees from Yeshiva University.

Rabbi Dr. Abadie is also a practicing medical doctor. He earned his medical degree from SUNY Downstate Medical Center. He completed a residency in internal medicine, and a fellowship in gastroenterology and endoscopy at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.

He currently resides in Dubai.
